Strengths

1.  At 6’6″, 210 lbs, Helenius is an ideal checking line center with excellent size and strength.
2. Has a great wrist shot to compliment his rugged style of play; he excels at occupying space in front and is intimating physical force.
3. Finishes his checks and is a huge load to stop when setting up in front of the net or when he has the puck in the corners along the boards.

Area’s for Improvement

1. Needs time to grow into his frame.
2. Doesn’t have any particular skill set that stands out.

Scouting Report:

Samuel Helenius is a big frame 6’6″ Center, who is a good two-way player, and plays with a physical edge. Helenius is a good skater for his size, but it takes some real power to get a 6’6, 200lb frame moving. Another strength of his game is his puck protection; his big frame makes it extremely hard for defenders to move him off the puck. Something else that stands out is his shot. He can fire his wrister and has good accuracy as well. Helenius might not have a top-tier IQ, but he understands coverages and can pick gaps, and this area of his game is a plus overall. Helenius has a nose for the net and finds himself around the crease looking for a rebound to cash in on. Defensively Helenius is physical and aggressive, and also has a good stick. He breaks up plays with regularity and is usually in a good position. Helenius does not have the hands to be a top 6 player in the NHL. At times he has to look down at the puck to corral it, and can also lose pucks in stride. While his positional awareness is good for a pivot, he does not always have an instinctive understanding of where his linemates are in the offensive zone. Samuel Helenius is still a work in progress and is far from finished progress; which likely makes him a 2nd round pick in the 2021 draft.

Skill:

A Big and Physical, Checking Line center, that is a great net front presence on the power play.

Style Comparison: Brian Boyle

NHL Potential: Checking-Line Center
