QUENTIN MUSTY

Quentin Musty is having a great season in the OHL with the Sudbury Wolves, putting up 24 goals, 49 assists, and 73 points in 50 games, and also put up 5 points in 4 games with the US U18 team at the Hlinka Gretzky Cup. Musty is a big, strong, sturdy, athletic net-driven winger with slick puckhandling skill one-on-one and a balanced skater’s stride. He can unload from his hip into a heavy snapshot or drop and drive the net into a tuck play in tight. Musty has a wicked shot, and his playmaking ability has exploded this season as he has finally taken the next step as an offensive creator, using his teammates at a level he previously seemed disinterested in. He already has NHL-ready size with three-zone effort and detail, however, he does need to improve his skating if he is to thrive at the next level. Musty is a dual-offensive threat, displaying a great combination of his playmaking abilities and shot. Musty is extremely skilled as his creativity shows whenever he’s in transition or in the offensive zone. Quentin is a physically gifted winger with a heavy release but needs to improve his processing speed and overall awareness on the ice if he wants to grow into an impactful NHL forward. Right now, I see Musty being a late 1st round pick in the 2023 draft with top 6 upsides.

Strengths

1. Musty has elite puck touch in tight around the net and is blessed with the ability to create offense.
2. His shot is excellent; his wrister is powerful and accurate, with elite goal-scoring capabilities.
3. His hands are excellent, borderline elite, and uses his frame well to make plays around the net.

Areas of Improvement

1. lacks hockey sense, planning, and engagement at times.
2. doesn’t get into positions to use his most lethal skillset.
3. struggles to find soft ice and rarely drives the middle lane or the net.

Scouting Report

Quentin Musty can be frustrating, but at the same time, an intriguing, player to watch. He has a high-end toolkit and his skills are both obvious but are marred by a consistent lack of hockey sense, engagement, and planning. His wrister is powerful and accurate, but he doesn’t get into positions to use it consistently. He struggles to find soft ice and rarely drives the middle lane or the net despite his physical advantage, both in terms of size and skating ability. Although his skating is mechanically sound and his edgework is strong, he could definitely improve his skating speed. Quentin is extremely skilled as his creativity shows whenever he’s in transition or in the offensive zone. Musty has elite puck touch in tight around the net. He’s blessed with the ability to create offense. His three-zone effort and detail, however, need to improve as does his skating. Playmaking is not a strength of his, and he certainly projects more as a goalscorer at the next level. Defensively, he rarely picks up his assignment and tends to get caught puck-watching. A lot of his issues could be addressed if he gained the habit of consistently scanning his surroundings, which he doesn’t yet do. It would allow him to see open teammates waiting for his pass, and allow him to find his defensive assignment as well. It would also allow him to find soft ice in the offensive zone, and allow him to realize when he is about to be pressured by opponents, rather than skating straight into them. An NHL comparison for Quentin Musty is James Neal, who was a really good goal scorer in the NHL, but struggled with consistency at times and was a massive defensive liability. Quentin Musty is certainly a project player but due to his upside as a goal scorer, he could definitely be taken in the late to early 2nd round of the draft.

Skill: Powerful, physically gifted winger with a heavy, accurate release on his shot.
